Freezer Organization

Since milk is precious and also perishable, it is very important to ensure the oldest of your milk is being used first, and in our case, being shipped to Prolacta for donation. To accomplish this, it is most efficient to store your milk in an organized fashion.

Here are some helpful tips from our donors! Let us know what works for you!

The video covers the following:

HOW TO TRACK THE OLDEST MILK

  • Color – use a different color sharpie marker for each month, so that milk expression dates are simple to discern visually.
  • Location – place the oldest milk in a specific location in your freezer and as it is used or shipped, continue to move the oldest milk into that location.
  • As new freezer bags are added, they are added to the bottom of the chest freezer. The oldest milk is always on top. The freezer bags make moving bags easier.

HOW TO STORE MILK SO THAT IT IS ORGANIZED, EASY TO PULL OUT AND MOVE

  • Flat-bottom freezer (Ziplock) bag. Each freezer bag is numbered so that the oldest milk is easier to discern when shipping.
  • Inexpensive storage containers, which can be found for under $1 each.
  • Recycled boxes create partitions.
  • Recycled soda boxes.
  • Ice cube trays.
