How donor Sami eliminated bacterial contamination in her breastmilk

Due to the fragile nature of the infant population receiving Prolacta product in NICUs across the country, the Milk Bank Team works closely with donors to ensure that every precaution is taken during the process of milk expression. Here is Sami’s testimony describing how she successfully eliminated bacterial contamination from her contributions by making just a few simple changes to her routine.  Donating to sick infants in need requires an immense amount of commitment and dedication on the part of our donors, and their efforts are greatly valued and appreciated.

Donor Sami's Experience Preventing Contamination

My experience of eliminating bacterial contamination in my breast milk was a surpisingly easy process. Don't get me wrong, it was like teaching an old dog new tricks because I had been using my previous sanitation methods for a total for 18 months in between my 2 pumping journeys. The method I thought was working was not working at all, and actually caused bacteria to get in my hard-earned breast milk. After talking at length with Prolacta's Donor Development and Care Manager, Jennifer Mancini, on what could be done, she highly

recommended I purchase a bottle sanitizer and dryer combination.

After doing my research, I decided on the Baby Brezza One-Step Bottle Sanitizer.  Little did I know my life was about to become a whole lot easier!

Once I received my Baby Brezza I implemented the new sanitation methods recommended by Prolacta. After each pumping session I would wash my bottles, breast shields, and valve membranes with warm soapy water then simply stick them in the Baby Brezza, press the button, and just like that…

I had COMPLETELY sterilized breast pump parts, bacteria free! Not only was I able to streamline my sanitation process, but I now had the peace of mind knowing that all my expressed milk could go towards saving preemies' lives.
