Born: 26 weeks
Birth weight: 2 lbs 6 oz
Days in the NICU: 67
During her third pregnancy, Kathy’s unexplainable complications led her doctors to anticipate a premature birth. While they tried bedrest and other preventative measures, Shiloh was born via cesarean at 26 weeks, weighing 2 lbs 6 oz.
During his 67-day NICU stay, he was essentially a "feeder and grower" thanks in part to being nurtured with Prolacta products. He was able to breathe well and had no brain bleeding. His neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) stay was “unremarkable,” which is exactly what his family hoped for.
When Shiloh was discharged from the NICU at 36 weeks gestational age, he was a healthy 5lbs 8oz. “His name is very intentional. Shiloh means peace. Ethan means strength - and that is what he has been since he came into this world so unexpectedly - our calm little warrior,” said Kathy.
“We heard about Prolacta from the doctors and nurses. We had no idea what it was until they told us,” she said. Before our fortifiers, Shiloh was gaining weight very slowly. To help change that, the hospital began mixing our fortifiers with her breastmilk.
“There were times they had to up the caloric level because he wasn’t gaining enough. Fortunately, Prolacta products helped him get to a consistent weight gain that the doctors were happy with,” said Kathy.
“One time when I was shooting the breeze with one of the doctors (since we were there every day while Shiloh was in the NICU), we asked him what the greatest need was in the NICU to help these babies, and he said 'more Prolacta',” she added.
Knowing about Prolacta and the need for donors, Kathy who is an overproducer, decided she could help babies like her own NICU baby who benefitted so much from Prolacta’s fortifiers.
