How to stack breastmilk in your freezer for more space

When you pump and produce more breast milk than your freezer can store, dumping some of it may seem like the only option. But before you pour your hard work down the sink, see if you can increase your freezer storage space by changing the way you store your milk bags. Shared from past and current donors, we've created the 4 steps to stacking breast milk for maximum freezer space and minimum breast milk waste.

4 steps to stack breastmilk in your freezer

  1. Fill your breast milk storage bags with 6 oz. portions and lay them flat in your freezer to maximize space.
  2. Once your milk is frozen, group your breast milk storage bags by expressed date into large Ziploc bags or any other rectangular containers. Remember to write the expressed date on each grouped bag.
  3. Stack the milk and in order with the most recent expressed milk at the bottom of your freezer. Rotate them around so the oldest milk is always on top.
  4. Once you are ready to clear out your freezer and ship the extra breast milk, read how to best pack your donor coolers!
